Founder of The Mimetic Method™. Creator of the Hidden Layer. English major, father, Girard nerd, dungeon master.
An English Major Who Walked Into Marketing Through the Front Door
People assume English majors stumble into marketing. Lance walked in on purpose. He studied literature in college and fell in love with the part most students dread: the analysis. The sitting with a paragraph and asking what the structure is doing that the words are not saying out loud. Anne Sexton for the raw nerve of it. Thomas Mann for the patience of a sentence that earns its ending. Douglas Adams for the reminder that the universe is absurd and you might as well laugh.
Then he taught himself direct response marketing, because marketing is writing with accountability. You find out immediately whether your words moved someone. Poetry taught him precision. Fiction taught him empathy. Direct response taught him to prove it.
What $750,000 of Marketing Education Actually Taught Him
Lance runs The Mimetic Method™, a done-for-you marketing agency based in Burley, Idaho. Ads, funnels, copy, strategy, for cash-based businesses across the country. Along the way he spent more than $750,000 on trainings, masterminds, conferences, and the private rooms where the direct response world teaches itself.
The pattern he kept finding, in his own work and everyone else's, was this: campaigns fail before the first word is written. They fail in the assumptions. The audience profile built from demographics and guesswork. The creative brief that sounds authoritative and contains nothing real. Everyone was executing beautifully on inputs nobody had checked.
Every agency, course, and tool he tried made the same assumption: that the client already knew what their buyers wanted. Nobody ever checked. So he built the thing that checks.
Girard at the Ad Account
The Hidden Layer is the research methodology behind every report on this site. It draws on Rene Girard's mimetic theory, the observation that people do not generate their desires alone, they borrow them from models they watch. It also draws on deep metaphor research, narrative psychology, and years of direct response testing that showed which insights actually move a number and which just sound smart in a deck.
The practice is unglamorous. Before a single word of strategy, Lance reads source-linked buyer evidence from the places where the market talks without a sales script: Reddit threads, forum arguments, reviews, and community discussions. What comes out is not a persona template. It is a map of who your buyers are copying, what rivalries drive them, and where their desire is heading. If you want the vocabulary, the glossary defines every term.
He also wrote a book about all of this, What Your Buyers Actually Want, twelve chapters written as one long kitchen-table conversation. The poet in him wrote it. The marketer in him pressure-tested every line.
The Facts
His son once asked what he does for work. He said, "I help people figure out what other people want." His son said, "So you're a mind reader?" Close enough.
